I grew up listening to an eclectic mix of musicians via my parents who, thankfully, fully encouraged my air-sax playing until I was old enough to pick up a real one. But alas, I soon found out that many other kids also wanted to play the same thing, so I was relegated to clarinet to fill out the school's band. Undeterred, I found my way back to saxophone over the following years by playing in the school jazz band, where one often plays both it and clarinet. Having now established a new love for playing multiple instruments, I continued adding woodwind doubles, starting with flute and, eventually, bassoon (i.e., the bedpost of the orchestra).
I've played with a wide variety of ensembles over the years, most recently with the B.S. Brass Band, In the Flesh! (Pink Floyd Tribute), Chicago Afrobeat Project, the Chicago Metropolitan Symphony, and Isabelle Haze. And of course, the incomparable Jeanie B! and the Jelly Beans!
Jeanie is that special type of person who knows exactly how inspiring music can be to children and follows that through by performing to them and involving them thoroughly during her shows. I started playing with her when my twin girls were three and have had the amazing experience of watching them grow up listening to her music for a few years now. They are so excited to see every show. And I'm excited to see them grow up having a hero they can look up to, someone who sings not just to them but alongside them.
